About Melanotan 2
Melanotan II (MT-II)
Research background as published in the scientific literature. Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only; nothing here is a claim about use in humans or animals.
Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic lactam analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) developed at the University of Arizona. It was designed as a more potent, metabolically stable version of alpha-MSH for research into melanogenesis and photoprotection.
Research has examined MT-II's interactions with multiple melanocortin receptors (MC1R-MC5R), with particular focus on MC1R (melanogenesis), MC3R and MC4R (energy and sexual function). It remains an investigational compound with an extensive preclinical literature and limited clinical research.

- 01MC1R MelanogenesisMelanotan II activates MC1R on melanocytes, stimulating melanin production through increased cAMP/PKA signalling and upregulation of tyrosinase activity. Research has examined this pathway in skin pigmentation and photoprotection research.
- 02MC4R & Sexual FunctionMT-II activates MC4R in the hypothalamus, which research has linked to sexual arousal pathways. Studies have examined the role of MC4R signalling in erectile function and sexual behaviour in preclinical models.
- 03Energy HomeostasisResearch has investigated MT-II's effects on energy balance through MC3R and MC4R activation, with studies examining food intake, energy expenditure, and body composition changes in rodent models of metabolic research.
