About Kisspeptin
Kisspeptin (Metastin)
Research background as published in the scientific literature. Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only; nothing here is a claim about use in humans or animals.
Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide encoded by the KISS1 gene, originally discovered as a metastasis suppressor gene product (hence also known as Metastin). Its role in reproductive neuroendocrinology was elucidated when KISS1R loss-of-function mutations were found to cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
Research has established kisspeptin as a critical upstream regulator of GnRH pulsatility, with studies examining kisspeptin neuron populations in the hypothalamus and their roles in puberty, fertility, and reproduction. Kisspeptin-54 (the longest active form) and shorter fragments including kisspeptin-10 have been studied in clinical research protocols examining GnRH and gonadotropin secretion in humans.

- 01GnRH Pulse GenerationKisspeptin acts on the KISS1R receptor on GnRH neurons to stimulate pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Research examines its role as a master regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis.
- 02HPG Axis ResearchLaboratory and clinical research has investigated kisspeptin's role in triggering pubertal onset, regulating the menstrual cycle, and modulating fertility. Studies have examined kisspeptin neuron populations in the hypothalamic arcuate and anteroventral periventricular nuclei.
- 03Reproductive EndocrinologyResearch has examined kisspeptin's diagnostic and research applications in studying reproductive disorders including hypothalamic amenorrhoea, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and polycystic ovary syndrome in both animal and human research models.
